Community as a Campfire
We often treat community as a nounβa thing we have. But the Hearth Model reveals it as a verbβa fire we tend. A community is a living energy system fueled by attention and care. When it thrives, it glows with Warmth. When neglected, it cools. This infographic explores the physics of that fire through the W.A.R.M. Framework.
Diagnostic: The Shape of the Fire
Comparison: A thriving community maintains high levels across all four dimensions, while a fading one collapses inward.
The W.A.R.M. Variables
The vitality of a community is defined by four interdependent forces. Like a fire, these elements must be present to sustain the flame.
W - Warmth (Gravity)
The pull that draws people in. It is belonging, safety, and emotional connection.
A - Ardor (Heat)
Love expressed through action. The passion and effort members contribute as "fuel."
R - Radiance (Light)
How far the story travels. The signals and inspiration that reach into the surrounding darkness.
M - Mission (Flame)
The shared reason for gathering. The anchor that aligns Ardor and Radiance.
The Math of the Fire
Warmth = Ardor Γ Radiance
A community thrives only when Ardor (Internal Heat) and Radiance (External Reach) are balanced. This "Vitality Matrix" shows what happens when the equation is unbalanced.
The Thriving Hearth
High Ardor + High Radiance. The fire burns hot and is seen from afar.
The Hidden Ember
High Ardor + Low Radiance. Intense internal bonding, but invisible to the world. Insular.
The Hollow Flash
Low Ardor + High Radiance. Lots of attention, but no warmth or substance. A passing trend.
Circuits of Belonging
Healthy communities form concentric zones around the fire. These are not hierarchies of power, but circuits of energy. People move inward or outward as life allows, but the Mission always remains the center.
Community Architecture
The Continuous Energy Circuit
1. Attraction
Warmth acts as gravity, pulling people toward the fire for safety and connection.
2. Contribution
Members contribute effort ("Fuel"). Participation generates Ardor (Heat).
3. Amplification
Heat creates Radiance (Light). Signals and stories travel outward.
4. Renewal
Radiance draws new Wayfarers to the Mission, reinforcing Warmth.
